Change Unknown Device name of PS3 in Media Sharing

Posted by Yogi On 11 November 2009 13 Commented | Under: Consoles, Playstation 3, Tips & Tricks

From the title of the post it should be clear, what I’m willing to do. Recently I got bumped on a comment from Mr. JJWATMYSELF. It is so unpleasant to see PS3 shown in Media sharing as “Unknown Device” . So I have decided to write a ‘very’ simple post on how to do it.

But before we start, you may find my previous Playstation 3 Posts Here

What I meant is this.

Unknown-Device

Next thing you would want to do is, Click Unknown Devices & note the MAC Address of the PS3. Instead Select the Address and Copy it.

Noting-MAC

Now Open Registry Editor. Registry Editor can be opened by typing “regedit” in search menu bar of Vista / Windows 7 or in RUN option in XP. Go to Find by pressing Ctrl + F, and now paste the noted MAC Adress.

Registry

You will now be taken to a Registry Key which is at the location
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Media Player NSS\3.0\Devices\

Make the Note of the MAC address and in that Key add a new string value of “FriendlyName” with a value of your desired name. (I wanted Unknown Device to appear as Yogi-PS3 so I entered the value Yogi-PS3)

Registry-value

Close registry editor and now go confirm whether its working or not.

PS3-renaming

Enjoy

  1. Hi,Yogi,I followed your instructions on how to name unknown device, but friendlyname does'nt appear.I checked other mac addresses and it is there. Also wmp12 media server shows on my ps3 and is working ok, but i can't change it from local network to all networks,it defaults back to local network when i try and change it.Here's a link for the screen shot for renaming unknown device. http://www.flickr.com/photos/tommytinkroom/409521...

      Hey Tommytinkroom,

You didnt create a new string name "FriendlyName"

Assuming 00-1D-##-##-##-E5 is your PS3's MAC address, in that key, you need to RIGHT CLICK > NEW > STRING.
Then Name that string to "FriendlyName" (F capital, N capital). Once that string is formed, Double click it, and give it a value of your Desired Name.

If you still have any problems changing the name. Give tell me the name that you want to have for your PS3 and I'll make you a reg file, which you will have to just download and open, and it will do the rest of the work..

Also is your PS3 connected to your Router/Modem/PC via Wire (Ethernet Cable) ?

Hey Yogi, Thanks again for another awesome tutorial. I too was bugged by that “Unknown Device”, so I’m glad you did this. Worked great and had no problems. Keep up the Windows 7 + PS3 tips. Oh, and 360, Wii, PSP stuff is welcome as well :P

    Thanks again.

I attempted to change the name of my PS3 like you explained. However in regedit there isn’t a devices tab in windows media player NSS\3.0\PoppedToast . The MAC address doesn’t appear in the left hand menu instead it is on the right side with 4 other MAC addresses. I created the FriendlyName string value but it didn’t work.
    Thanks, Frank

Just thought I’d say thanks. This brought an instant smile to face. Not because it worked exactly like you said it would but because it was so simple the way you explained it and it’s realy pointless feature when ya think about it but I live it.

    cheers
