PS3 Media Sharing + ESET Smart security problem, Solution

Posted by Yogi On 3 April 2009 23 Commented | Under: Consoles, Playstation 3

Play Station 3 provides a facinating way to share the media on your personal computer right on your Television sets.

But due to some settings people are finding it difficult to share the media. This is basically due to firewall problem they are facing. ESET Smart security also provide a personal firewall, which at default settings do not allow to share the media.

If you are getting an error like “DLNA protocol error (2104)” or “DNS error 807101102″

Here’s what you should do, if you have installed ESET Smart Security

ESET Smart Security 4.0

1) Toggle into the advance mode of ESET

2) Under the Setup Tab, select Personal Firewall

3) Select Filtering mode as ‘Interactive filtering’

4) Click on ‘Configure rules and Zones’ – Follow the bellow setting now.

ESET Creating rules

Create a new rule, in General Tab make Direction in Both and Action in Allow. Click on the Local Tab

Esetsmart

Click Browse in the aplication field and the browse for your Windows Media Player 11 Folder. Usually in your Program Files. Over there select wmpnetwrk.exe and open it.

esetsmart-rule2

Now Click on Zone Tab, Select Trusted Zone and click Edit. Add address with the settings mentioned in #13 in the figure. Apply the setting and click OK

5) Click on Advanced Personal Firewall setup

eset-rule-3

Select IDS and advanced option in the Personal Firewall settings. Check ‘Allow UPNP on the Trusted Zone’ and Remove ‘DNS Poisioning attack detection’. Also follow the settings mentioned in 2 and 3

Apply and then restart your Computer.

Now you will be able to Share Media to your PS3 as well as Surf Internet in PS3.

What I did to make PS3 Media Server work with ESET 4 was to make sure Java (TM) Platform SE binary, C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\javaw.exe, is set like this:

    Direction: Both
    Action: Allow
    Protocal: TCP & UDP
    Remote side: Zone: Trusted zone

I am new to gaming and bought the new PS3 slim. Since I use a Mac, I downloaded NullRiver’s MediaLink and it works great for wirelessly connecting to my iTunes and iPhotos but every time I attempt to watch an avi file, I get a DNLA error. I may watch 10 minutes successfully and then get the error. I have NO idea what I’m doing, so any help would be appreciated! Also, just downloaded the iMag theme and very interested in reading more of your suggestions about that theme…thanks for your great posts on modifying that theme.

    • Yogi says:

Mare, could you please show me the exact DLNA error (Number).

Is it only .AVI which is causing you this problem or other video files too?

Regarding iMag, I think there is one problem in it. It was related to Categories I guess or Archives. I think if you click on the category tag, the resulted page dont have “clickable” links to the categorized posts.

  14. Mare says:

Hi Yogi! Yes, so far it has been avi files only (but I have not tried watching any other file formats). I will play one tomorrow and get the exact error number for you. I finally just copied the movies to a flash drive and plugged the flash drive into the PS3…but it would be nice if I could stream.

    • Yogi says:

Agreed, we all like to have things wirelessly available. At first I also wanted all my sharing to be on Streaming, but then I bought 500 GB Ext (Formated to Fat 32) and then used it always.

Advantage is much better scrolling (searching) during a clip search ( Square button in videos). + I have noticed streaming doesnt support Subtitles of the videos having embedded subtitles but a directly accesesed (Ext. HDD) is able to provide it. Also Some of the “Xvid Codec” Videos didnt play on streaming but they did when played Raw.

Anyways we will try to make it work and both has its advantages.

  15. Mare says:

Yogi, you can play subtitles and closed captioning if you DON’T stream it? I had no idea! Since I am hard of hearing, I use closed captioning at ALL times, but thought there was no way to play the closed captioning file with the avi file on the PS3…how do I do that?

    • Yogi says:

Yes you can view subtitles in Ps3 video play. For that you need to add your subtitle by “muxxing” it into the video file. There are softwares for PC like AVI-Mux with which you can mux subtitle(.srt or .sub) to your video in just 3 mins and create a new video file with embedded subtitles. These can then be ON / OFF from in Menu option of PS3. But these video work only when played from external drive or in built Ps3 Hdd
